First Practices: Alliteration Icebreaker

Learning Objectives

  • Introduce squad members.

  • Get to know coach.

  • Build community.

Time Needed

~30 - 35 min.

Resources & Materials

  • Name tags/paper and markers (optional)

Lesson Outline

  • Introduce activity.
    • Arrange students in an open seating style. Each student must be able to see every other student.
    • Ask each student to come up with an alliteration that begins with the first letter of their first name. (Example: Cautious Clay/Rambunctious Robert).
  • Alliteration Icebreaker
    • To begin, select a student. Ask them to introduce themselves (e.g., “I’m Cautious Clay!”).
    • Move around the room in a consistent direction. Before introducing themselves, subsequent students must say the name of (and point to) each previous student in order. Continue until all students have introduced themselves.
      • Example:
        • First student: “I’m Cautious Clay!”
        • Second student: “He’s Cautious Clay, and I’m Rambunctious Robert!”
        • Third student: “He’s Cautious Clay. He’s Rambunctious Robert. I’m Spontaneous Samantha!”
  • Assessment
    • If time permits, ask for a volunteer student who can go around the room and say the name of each squad member in order. If that student is successful, give them a suitable reward (e.g., candy).
    • If time permits, the instructor should go around the room and name/point to each student.
      • Participating in the activity yourself may seem excessive. However, participating demonstrates to the students that you not only value the team, but care enough to “level the playing field” and act as “just” another member of the squad.”

Points of Improvement

  • Quiet students may be shy. Draw them out!

  • Beware excessive student cross-talk.

  • One student may dominate. Rein them in!

Signs of Mastery

  • Students know the names of one another with little prompting.

  • All students participate equally.

Instructor Notes

  • To improve participation, give a suitable reward (e.g., candy) for the student with the best/most humorous name.

  • If time permits, have a brief conversation with each student during the activity. This makes each student feel valued and gives each student a platform to speak.
